Weekend Update

Psst. If you're playing the License Plate game with your kiddo this summer and need the highly elusive North Dakota plate, check out Wamesit Lanes in Tewksbury, Mass.

My nine-year-old, Charlotte, and I pulled into the parking lot there recently and she let out a loud gasp. Was it Taylor Swift jumping out of a fancy SUV? Nope. Something better.

North Fuc%#' Dakota, baby!

Charlotte's been playing the game for weeks. She has five more to track down. Well, now four.

Girl on a mission

Meanwhile, inside the arcade and bowling alley, Charlotte's good fortunes and positive vibes continued. Flying high off the big North Dakota find, Charlotte was on a mission to amass as many tickets and prizes as she could.

With laser-focused precision that only Turkish sharpshooter Yusuf Dikeç could admire, Charlotte dropped dimes in Pop-a-Shot, slayed Skee-Ball and beat me in Air Hockey. She then challenged me to carry all her prizes out to the car. Challenge accepted, Princess.

While Charlotte's been on the hunt for plates, I started a little summertime game myself: Good Straw Hunting.

I'm collecting straws from New England restaurants and ranking them. Also, adding them to my burgeon collection. The idea was born out of my hatred for paper straws. Which really aren't straws. Just soggy, limp, foul-tasting masses of wet toilet paper when you really think about it.

While I have a ways to go, here's my current Greater Boston Straws Power Rankings.

Straw Power Rankings

  1. Honey Dew Donuts. Bright, bold red. Longgggggg. Big mouth opening. Indestructible. Can be used more than once. Pictured below.

  2. Dunkin'. Bright orange. Wide mouth. Sturdy. Long. Available in two sizes.

  3. McDonald's. Iconic yellow, red and white lines. The widest of openings. Easy to rip wrapper. Grab a bundle of 2009 straws for only $6,900.00 on eBay. Lol.

The Honey Dew straw means business.

I'm sure that I'll have updates and more to come on straws. In the meantime, enjoy the Song of the Post.
