The Abbey sizzles with contemporary vibe and fare

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - I recently had some business to take care of in Porter Square and afterwards found myself inside The Abbey, a cozy eatery & bar offering pub-style "New American" bites and wicked late hours.

I haven't reviewed a local restaurant in awhile, so I decided it was time to take out my camera phone and get to work.

Sidenote: When I was writing for The Sun every week I'd review a local restaurant. If the review was good, the owner would buy the paper and frame it. If you find yourself at a Greater Lowell restaurant be on the lookout for one of my old stories. If you spot one, please snap a photo and send it to me.

Food

Grilled Pizza of the Day ($15.00). Topped with Pepperoni, Wild Mushrooms, Pickeled Jalapeños, Fresh Ricotta and Garlic Oil, this pie is heavy, but not too heavy. Let's put it this way: I had three slices and didn't need to loosen a belt buckle.

Chicken Wings ($13.00). Features home-made hot sacue and blue cheese. Yum. These had a delayed kick, but it wasn't overpowering. I had three and brought the rest home. I devoured the remaining wings for second dinner.

Hand-cut Truffle Fries ($9.00). With roasted garlic mayo on the side, these fries were the highlight of the meal. It's impossible to eat less than a dozen of these in one sitting.

Atmosphere

Dimly lit. Dark wood. Adaquetely climate controlled. The Abbey hits all the marks here. With bars and table seating (including high tops) spread across two floors, the place was packed and buzzing on a recent Thursday night.

If you go

Try the on-street parking on Massachusetts Avenue. The meters run only until 8 p.m. and after that it's free.
